“Where do you get your ideas from?”
“Ideas? Oh, I got a million dreams. All I do is dream. All the time.”
“I thought you play the piano.”
“No, this is not piano, this is dreaming.”

It’s so precious
こんなはずじゃなかったけど
Now I miss it… yeah
一人でも歩いてく
笑っていたのは強がりからじゃなく
泣き顔なんかもう見たくないでしょう
星屑みたいなひとつぶの出会い
大丈夫。次の光ならすぐそこに

What this track reminds me of: a lake in Northern Japan that my parents used to take me when I was little. It was called the Swan Lake because swans would always stop by and rest in this lake before continuing their migration.
There was a bridge that went over this lake and into the woods. I never went there. I always wanted to know what was on the other side, but I stayed on the safe side of the bridge where my parents were, feeding the swans.

Carousel - “Where Have You Gone”
Normally, I shy away from the spring and summer seasons and stay indoors. I loathe the heat and the humidity that always make me wonder how I ended up in the state of Texas. However, it seems as though these warmer months make for the perfect backdrop for airy tunes such as this one. “Where Have You Gone” takes me back to long, summer nights spent chasing fireflies and living in my own little world filled with, well, love. I guess spring and summer aren’t so bad after all.

DeVotchKa - “The Winner Is”
The number one word I’d use to describe DeVotchKa’s music is “hopeful.” I don’t know what it is exactly, but something about them makes me feel so damn optimistic whenever listen, especially when it comes to this song. Like me, you might’ve discovered them after they scored the cult classic Little Miss Sunshine, or maybe you discovered them when they went on one of their first tours with pin-up icon Dita Von Teese (They originally started off playing the backing music at burlesque shows. From humble beginnings, as they say.). Either way, their charm is undeniable, and every time I hear their accordions or plucky violins I can’t help but feel content, even if it’s just for the duration of the song. Hopefully you’ll feel the same.
See you next Wednesday!

Excuse my blatant display of ignorance concerning actual music theory, but check out the sexy arpeggios going on at the beginning of this new Beach House offering. They give way to lush, gorgeous voices that sound so friendly and intimate. After a certain point, I stop trying to describe the song. I give in to the ebb and flow. I listen instead of hear. Give it a try.

Man, do Swedes really know how to make great pop music.
Miike Snow just released Happy to You, and it’s one of the most interesting releases you’ll hear all year, but definitely one that will have you busting a move. Also, in even cooler news, Miike Snow, along with a bunch of the other extremely talented Swedish indie artists, banded together to form a brand new record label called INGRID.

Loz Contreras - “Break You Down (feat. Sanna Hartfield)”
From the coffeeshop in Little Italy, Manhattan where I am sat, I can see through the windows the crowds of people walking past. I love the way that people in the city are dressed; it looks effortless, but the rest of us know that they’ve spent hours in stores picking out clothes that fit right and time in the morning fixing their jackets so that they look like they were thrown haphazardly over their shoulders. I laugh to myself hearing the snippets of conversation from a woman who is showing around her friend from out of town (“Have you ever been to China? It’s exactly like the streets of Beijing”). I even find the tourists charming; they take so many photos of things because they find them mismatched. When I moved to Chicago, I remember feeling the same way in my poorly tailored pants looking up at the pink buildings right next to the green ones. No one in Plano would have ever let their uniform units diverge so outrageously from the others. I’m grateful for where I grew up, but there’s something undeniable about the way this place feels that makes me never want to go back.

The bari alone just absolutely blows the show away. Some serious swag throughout.
The original recording with Mingus on Bass and Art Pepper rocking the Bari is here if you are a jazz nerd and like to hear the same song twice.
